Adolescent fertility: A hidden penalty

education, gender gaps, adolescent fertility, academic achievementAbstract
Premature parenthood has become a problem with an intergenerational scope that affects all facets of the adolescent and his or her family. Facing this scenario will have consequences on the adolescent's comprehensive development and students' academic performance, the extent of these repercussions varying according to gender and socioeconomic environment. This article analyzes the relationship between academic performance and adolescents facing premature motherhood or fatherhood, based on gender and type of school support approach. The analysis uses econometric estimates based on a fixed-effects model, which reveals a hidden reality. Although adolescent fertility is associated with lower academic performance, the deterioration is greater for men than for women. This result reveals the extent of the patriarchal system and the debate on masculinities, which has been little explored.
